There are currently countless possibilities that we have with technologies such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality that can contribute to society
The benefits that technology brings to the area of health and medicine are gaining more and more attention from researchers, professionals in the area, entrepreneurs and even from the political authorities. The unexpected pandemic scenario showed how much we need to accelerate and support initiatives in the area.
In one of my surveys, I came across alarming data on the death rate from heart disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 17.5 million people die from cardiovascular disease each year. In Brazil, the annual average reaches 350 thousand, which corresponds to a life lost every 40 seconds.
Thinking about it, I started a search for solutions from Artificial Intelligence, in order to help and avoid serious heart diseases. I found a lot of cutting-edge technology that aims to mitigate this health problem, in addition to many, many researches that focus on the subject.
But, why not take advantage of the knowledge I acquired in three major areas of technology (IoT - Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality) and build a intelligent system capable of collecting ECG signals in real time and providing an early diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmia?
According to the report by Grand View Research, IoT in the healthcare sector is expected to reach $ 409.9 billion by 2022.
The world lives on ideas, whether new or not, if the goal is to help people, it's worth it!
So, using IoT, a pulse sensor to collect ECG signals and apply machine learning techniques, it was possible to analyze all this data and identify cardiac arrhythmia with a certain degree of precision. The focus of this project was to analyze the QRS wave of the ECG signal and interpret whether it is a normal signal or if there is any abnormality. A cardiac arrhythmia is a problem with the frequency or rhythm of the heartbeat.
Currently, ECG analysis is widely used for the diagnosis of many heart diseases. In addition, the automated analysis of these registered biomedical signals assists doctors in their daily work and allows for the development of warning systems.
With that in mind, I added a real-time visualization mode to the project through Augmented Reality, making it possible to observe the person's heart rate along with an alert signal.
This application allows continuous monitoring of biomedical signals and will not be restricted only to the hospital or home environment, with the help of the Internet, we can monitor this data online, over the Internet, at any time and from anywhere.
As a reflection, I want to show in this article, the countless possibilities that we have currently with technologies such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality, enhancing even more if we combine them. This application I developed in my
home, in approximately 3 months, in free time and in very limited conditions. Using much more creativity and the desire to find solutions than complex technologies and expensive accessories. Now, imagine a company working on such solutions? Certainly the biggest beneficiary will be our society.
I also bring the concern with the level of our schools, especially public ones. In order to leave a legacy of technological advancement, we need much more goodwill than necessarily very high investments.
I encourage you to continue in the search for knowledge, this, together with creativity and goodwill, will make a difference in this and in the next generations.
