The Project Based Learning (PBL) approach using the ChatGPT AI tool to assist in Engineering Education

Engineering Education today has undergone several learning approaches in most universities, mainly in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Schools have realized that the training of an engineer, with skills and especially creativity, is currently far behind the needs of the job market and practically without the use of technology, in a passive form of learning.
Transformations in Engineering Education are necessary, mainly, to place the student in a world of work with practical technologies and contacts with the “factory floor”. To this end, it is necessary for Engineering Education to move towards an active and creative form of learning.
Project Based Learning (PBL) is one of these methodologies adopted (active methodology), since the student must, since entering a specific Engineering course at the university, work in collaborative, cooperative groups with the purpose of developing a specific project that can be provided for the whole class (by the teacher) or a project determined by each work group. There are several active approaches in several universities, but PBL in Engineering Education is one of the most used as it was implemented in 1974 at Aalborg University, in Denmark.
In order to find topics related to the projects, as a starting point for the assembly and development of the project, students have to research various topics related to the project for discussion in groups.
This is where the role of the search tool, ChatGPT, comes into play. It is the teacher's responsibility to provide the basic fundamentals of how the search works and the data obtained and the objectives of using this tool.
It is important that students understand that ChatGPT has limited information (2021) and that it does not solve the project, it only provides data so that their indications can be used for critical analyzes discussed by students.
This is a form of learning that is being used in universities, which have Engineering courses, and which wish to introduce their students to a new aspect of Education integrated with AI.
