
Skills for educating in the age of AI and the challenges of the Brazilian context

Panama, often recognized for its lush biodiversity and iconic canal, has made significant progress in other areas, proving itself to be much more than just a tourist destination. In recent years, the country has demonstrated a firm commitment to promoting governance, risk management, compliance and, more specifically, preventing money laundering, money laundering and terrorist financing.
To prove this, last October, I was invited byAssociation of Compliance Officers of Panama (ASOCUPA)to present a topic that is already well known in Brazil:Security, data privacy and artificial intelligence. The central theme of the Congress was “Strengthening the Compliance Culture from a Strategic and Operational Perspective”an extremely important event in the global fight against illicit activities in this matter. Topics such as the Prevention of Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism were highly highlighted, as it is known that Latin American countries have made great efforts to combat all crimes.
In general, Latin America has experienced growthgrowing interest and concern regarding the topics of Governance, Risks, Compliance and AML/FT (Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing), generating increasing interest from numerous professionals on the topic.
These issues have gained increasing relevance across Latin America as companies, financial institutions and governments recognize the importance of establishing solid corporate governance practices, risk management and compliance with internal and external regulations.
During the period I was in Panama, I experienced intense moments and had the opportunity to speak with important figures, including the president of the Banco de Fomento de Panama, directors of several private organizations, Compliance Officers (in English), representatives of government institutions and Furthermore, I was able to learn about several ongoing initiatives in Latin America aimed at promoting the principles of ethics, integrity, corporate governance, compliance and other relevant topics. A unique experience.
PRIVACY AND DATA PROTECTION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
We can say that we are living in a “new era”, the era of artificial intelligence (AI), which has brought with it a series of technological advances that are transforming the way we live, work and interact with the world around us and even how we feel. we have fun.
When approaching the topic of Artificial Intelligence to the Panamanian public, it was also necessary to dispel some already “preconceived” ideas, such as:“AI will replace humans in crucial activities”or“AI will steal my job”, phrases that are also frequently heard here in Brazil.
Well, having overcome this challenge, it brought to light some issues that are also challenging and more complex and are related to privacy and data protection. As AI systems become more ubiquitous, it is crucial to discuss how we can balance technological progress with preserving individual rights, i.e. personal data privacy.
Privacy and data protection are fundamental pillars of a democratic and fair society. They ensure that individuals have control over their personal information and protection against misuse of their data by any other person or company. As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, the amount of data collected and processed by AI systems will also increase exponentially. This raises significant concerns about how this data is used and protected.
CHALLENGES IN THE AI AGE: FROM COLLECTION TO RESPONSIBLE USE
As you know, in Brazil, we already have in force the General Personal Data Protection Law, (Law 13,709/2018), which deals with the broadest aspects of personal data, from data collection by corporations.
Systems AI operators rely on large data sets to learn and improve their skills. This often involves collecting personal data, which can range from medical histories, financial records to our consumer preferences.
The fact is that the excessive collection of personal data can compromise people's privacy, especially when they are not properly protected, which is the responsibility of the corporations that have them.
But what are we going to do? Avoid using AI systems? Fear her? Not really, the big challenge is ensuring the responsible use of AI systems. Automation and the ability to make independent decisions of these systems can have significant implications for human rights, such as equal access to services, opportunities and justice. It is essential that AI is developed and used in an ethical and equitable manner.
WHAT DO WE TRY TO EXPLAIN AND EXPOSE?
Ethics and transparency are fundamental to ensuring trust in AI technologies. Corporations must be transparent about how they collect, use and share data. This includes disclosing algorithms and explaining how decisions are made.
Furthermore, as a best practice, privacy should be incorporated from the beginning of the development of AI systems. This means that privacy considerations must be an integral part of thesystem design, (privacy by design, according to Law 13,709/2018), instead of being treated as an afterthought.
CONCLUSION
As final reflections, which also serve us Brazilians, is to make use of artificial intelligence, always with an opportunity bias, to improve quality of life, boost business progress and optimize businesses.
However, it is essential to address privacy and data protection concerns proactively. This involves the collaboration of governments, organizations, developers and users to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly, respecting the rights and dignity of everyone.
One thing is a fact, the protection of privacy and personal data should not be supplanted in the name of technological advances, but rather integrated as a central component of the development and use of AI.
